In Part I of this series we looked at incidents that happened in one particular game, caused largely by the referee's attitude and style. As my editor says, I'll bet a dollar to a penny that he has far more of that type of game than most of his peers.

It was quiet ... too quiet

The game started out quietly enough until the referee's style became more obvious. When he called a penalty, instead of heading to report the infraction, he would wait and stare at the offender and often pile on an unsportsmanlike conduct or 10-minute misconduct penalty when he would witness — surprise, surprise — the offender express disapproval with the call.

This referee was also loud, which, as I said last time, is not always a bad thing. But it was his attitude that was the problem. If, for example, there was a player coming onto the ice with improper equipment — a chin strap not buckled, for example — he would point at the player and loudly yell: "YOU! OFF THE ICE!"
