ormally, when I attend my son's games, I watch him (he's a goalie) and the game and pay little attention to the officials. But on this occasion, I have to admit the referee stole the show. And no, that's not a good thing, at least not this time.

Loud and confrontational

He was loud, which isn't always a bad thing. If you have a good attitude, it doesn't hurt to yell at the players to break it up, or move the puck, or follow the play. But this referee had a confrontational attitude, and I knew almost from the start something major could start, simply because his attitude was putting players off their game.
