The end is the beginning

irst of all, start with the end in mind. As in most things in life, you won’t know how to get there if you don’t know where you’re going. What are the goals of your clinic? What do you want people to get out of it?

Examples might be to improve skills and rules knowledge, have fun, standardize mechanics and rule interpretations, and recruit people for your association. Better yet: Be specific. In education they used to have people write behavioral objectives: "75 percent of the students will score 90 or above on the batter interference quiz." Now, that's a set-able goal though perhaps not a do-able one.

I also ask myself what are my expectations from the clinic. My answers are:

  • to teach the required amount;
  • to create an environment that is fun and conducive to learning;
  • to be organized;
