n Part I, I went over some of the songs that are truly great and how we can learn about officiating from that transcendental poetry. I also took a shot at hockey’s habit of indulging in music that blows. Both issues are important enough to be tackled again.

Bruce Springsteen – Born to Run

Bruce Springsteen has been adopted by far too many easy listening and awful "cool jazz" stations. That is not the fault of the Boss. What the Boss can be blamed for is the outstanding catalog of songs he has written, the ultimate of which was "Born to Run." The song details the need to get out of the spiral of small town New Jersey to create a real shot at life, the need to leave “A death trap/A suicide rap/We’ve got to get out while we can/ ’Cause tramps like us/Baby we were born to run.”

 

Officiating is often like that. Staying in one place is a death trap. And tramps like us officials, we’ve got to stick together; it is we who were born to run. We have to stick together, and we have to work hard to avoid standing still. To stand still is to fall backwards. The journey is more fun than the destination in this gig. The journey of becoming better officials, even in small increments, is where all the fun lies. If you keep in mind that we are all tramps, and we are born to run, you can have a lot more fun with this officiating thing.
