ig business, including the international conglomerates, had set up headquarters and life was good. The Carlton Center was the shining star in the city. Towering 50 floors above the pavement, it was the address to have. Numerous embassies had offices there, and one of the top property and mining houses, the Anglo American Corporation, owned the show. The best five-star hotel in Johannesburg, the glamorous Carlton, also formed part of the complex.

And hockey?

A tiny circular ice rink in the shopping center had proven very popular, and the corporation had decided to build an American standard rink on top of the car park. Yes, you did read correctly. The rink was on the seventh floor of the parkade.

Compared to the other rinks in the country at the time it was spectacular, the biggest and smartest. The ice stewards wore proper trousers with bright red jackets and blue ties. It even had a Zamboni!
