Get yourself mentally prepared for the season

Some thought today can make your officiating a lot better

A few years ago I tried my hand at refereeing summer roller hockey. The season itself was forgettable enough, but I have distinct memories of the first time I got back on the ice after a summer on wheels.

I fell over, flat on my face.

(For the uninitiated, inline skates don't have a rocker. They're a straight line, while ice skates are curved. The skating action is roughly the same, but standing up on inline skates requires much less balance.)

I don't referee inline hockey anymore, but that experience still comes back to me a few weeks before a new season begins. It reminds me that there's an adjustment to be made before you get back on the ice.
